To belong is a core human need. To belong is to be connected. To be connected to is be held at the core of our being. That Who we Are and What we Do matters.
We are all born into a place and time and are connected to that. What happens at birth and in those formulative years and after provide the range of experience that our mind as it forms understands as belonging; what and who and where and IF we belong. As we move into adulthood so many of us feel something is missing. We look for it in new experiences, new partners, substances, beliefs, ideologies and groups/tribes to belong to. The key is we are searching and in that search we are looking outside to find connection. So many of us however, have sustained deep wounds that have created disconnection from the place and people that are at the foundation of our understanding of self. To make matters worse we lead with this wound and it informs our actions and selection of people we choose to associate with. When we are unconscious of this process we tend to be attracted to people and situations that are similar to what we grew up with. Or we seek people and situations that rebel against that which we grew up in.
Either way we our experience is selective and reinforces the ideas we have about belonging/not belonging.
First and foremost you must belong to yourself. You must fully inhabit the body you are in, where it is in space and time, here and now. This is your foundation from which all persuits flow. What undermines this are many things: busyness, distraction, disassociation, anxiety and addiction. In order to counteract that requires you to 1st be aware that one, many or all of those things are happening within you. So, awareness is primary to beginning to change. In order to do this effectively is why we start a practice. Practice can be many things; meditation, yoga, physical training of any sort, mindfulness exercises, health protocols, body care. It is immensely helpful to begin any of these things with the intention that the practice is not to get better at the the thing you are doing (although with consistency this happens) but to get better at living. The second foundational step is to make sure, each day that intentially connect with nature. My Teacher Hyemeyhosts Storm was taught through the use of a device called the medicine wheel. The first wheel learned was the childrens Wheel and it taught that the first act of creation was the Sun, the Second: Earth, the Third: All manner of plants, the Fourth: All forms of Animals and creatures and finally the Fifth: Human Beings. This wheel reveals the fundamental truth that Human life is bourne out of, dependant on, and inextricably connected to all these forms of creation in order to exist. Deeply considering this wheel shows us very clearly our place in this life, who we are and what our responsibilties are. This awareness teaches us to deeply respect the world and body we inhabit as it is the framework in which Mother Life expresses.
Even if you have come from a broken home, a disfunctional family, a society in decline, when we remember the lesson of this foundational wheel we remember who we are, how we belong and our purpose for being here.
From this foundation we can find our way in relating to others. Family is Relationship. This is also why this was a key and core concept for many original peoples around the world. We see that when we talk about connection that it is in fact a family priciple. If all we acknowledge as family is a violent, broken or abusive, or disconnected example experienced as we grew up then our lives become a quest for belonging. And when we intentially experience the beauty, the grace, the cycles of life and death and renewal, we find the living examples that will give us the resilience to move though those cycles in our own experience. Out of appreciation and respect we then embark on creating relationships that are appreciative and respectful. This has a profound effect and help us to heal and elevate our own family dynamics. It also means we will not be prey for alternative “families or tribes” that are led by disconnected and damaged people who whether intentionally or unintentionally prey on the vulnerable. When we are unaware and desperately seeking to belong we lead with the wound when looking for connection. This is how cults of all forms (religious, political, intellectual, ideological) pull members in.
The Original Family Principle teaches us that to have meaningful, thoughtful, fullfilling and connected relationships with others is key to the life and health of the Family as a whole. We all come from the same family of life; Sun, Earth, Plants and Animals make up our Family. In that we are the same. There are infinite ways to express that fundamental truth that is actualized in our own living experience. When we lead with Respect and common ground we create beauty.
Our bodies are made up of Matter from this earth and of Cosmic particles. We belong to a cosmological family as well. Sun, Solar system, Galaxy and Universe. Cosmic Intelligence is literally expressed in mathmatical progression that forms all Matter. We are all Family. Being in and acknowledging the wonder of Nature is knowing our place, seeing and learning of the magnificent, subtly balanced, perfectly expressed Divine Principle in Action. We Belong because we Exist! Take time to acknowledge the Family of Life you come from, express through and are a part of!
